Turkeys and Giving Thanks

Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving.

Well, it's officially November, the month of Thanksgiving. I was sitting in my office at the Chetco River Resort and took a moment from my diligent attempt at work to look out my window. There I saw a few wild turkeys, some of the many forms of wildlife that can be found at the resort. I thought that was quite an appropriate way to begin this month.

We still have a few off the water cabins available at the Chetco River Resort for the Thanksgiving holiday so don't panic if you haven't made a reservation left. But we are down to only a few so don't wait too much longer either.

The fall run of King Salmon have begun and the season is officially open. There are plenty of charter and guide services available to help you catch that big one out there and the weather and water are pretty mild this time of year.

Fall is here and with it comes our 'summer'. This is the time of year we typically get our best weather. It's a beautiful time to be here and the drive over is spectacular with the changing trees and fall colors beginning to show.

Summer is finally here at the coast. We have been enjoying the sunshine at last. Interestingly, Chetco River Resort is just far enough upriver to most of the time be out of the coastal fog we get during the summer months.

We recently took at jet boat ride up the Rogue River at Gold Beach. They took great care to find wildlife for us to see: deer, osprey, otters. I thought to myself how lucky I am - I can see all of those things right in my own back yard at Chetco River Resort. We have a family of osprey that have made a nest there at the top of a tree in the harbor and come back each year to raise new chicks. In fact, their latest offspring is just learning how to fly and can be seen hopping from branch to branch testing his wings. We have a family of otters that live in the harbor. I watched one of them drag a salmon as big as he was onto the shore and start feasting. Because we are so close to the mouth of the river we are still in the tidal exchange so we get seals coming up to fish and this time of year pelicans as well. I recently took a picture of a deer outside my office window and cabin #9 isn't called Turkey Trot by chance. We get wild turkeys roaming the park as well. It truly is a fantastic and beautiful place to be.

One Tired Dog

 

 

Katiebug can often be found snoozing under the desk at the White Rock Office. If you happen to catch her there feel free to say hi. She is very friendly and loves to be acknowledged and told how cute she is.

The weather here is nice and cool with high coastal clouds in the morning that burn off to a spectacular afternoon and evening. It's such a relief to get out of the heat that even the morning clouds are welcome.

The pelicans are here! July is when we get our first sight of these oh-so-fun-to-watch birds. Sitting on your deck, watching them dive bomb for fish or just doing their fly-bys is not a bad way to spend the afternoon.
